The Electrify Africa Act was extremely close to being enacted into law in the last Congress. The legislation had over one hundred members of Congress signed on as co-sponsors, was overwhelmingly passed in the House and passed in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee by voice vote. There is still a lot of momentum on our side, but Congress should not delay in getting the legislation reintroduced this year. House Foreign Affairs Chairman Ed Royce (R-CA) said that this bill is one of his top priorities, and the new Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Bob Corker is committed to getting it across the finish line. I am asking for your help. Please ask Chairman Corker and Ranking Member Menendez and Chairman Royce and Ranking Member Engel to reintroduce and move this critical legislation quickly. This bipartisan bill will help reduce poverty, improve health care, and bolster economic growth in Africa by helping African countries provide first time access to electricity for at least 50 million people by 2020. If you have any concerns about the cost of the bill, the Congressional Budget Office said that the legislation introduced last year would have reduced the budget deficit over the next 5 years. We can help improve the lives of millions of people at no new cost to American taxpayers.
