I am writing as a supporter of the ONE Campaign, the global organisation that fights for a more just world by demanding the investments needed to create economic opportunities and healthier lives in Africa, with an urgent briefing about the future of UK global health funding.

As you may be aware, in the autumn of 2025, the UK will announce its pledges towards two major global health funds - the Global Fund Against Aids, TB and Malaria (known as the Global Fund) and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI). The government will announce a decision on GPEI in the autumn, and in November the UK will also be co-hosting the Global Fund Replenishment Summit with South Africa. A briefing is attached with further information on both of these funds.

We are calling on MPs to show their support for the future of global health funding, and would therefore be grateful if you would consider writing to the Prime Minister to share your strong support for the UK continued funding of the fight against HIV, TB, malaria and polio.

We are calling on the UK government to pledge £1 billion towards the Global Fund, and for the Prime Minister to attend the Global Fund Replenishment Summit in November, in a leadership role as the co-host, to show that the UK continues to play a leadership role on this issue. We are also calling on the government to pledge £50 million per year, for the next two years, to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

We have attached some draft text for a letter to the Prime Minister, and would be grateful if you would considering writing personally to him to share your support for future funding of the Global Fund and GPEI.

When Parliament returns in September, there are also FCDO Oral Questions on 2nd September, and we are urging MPs to submit the following questions to the Foreign Secretary about the future of UK support for global health funding: 
 
To ask the Secretary of State when the UK will announce its contribution to the Global Fund Against Aids, TB and Malaria, and to confirm the UK will contribute at least £1 billion in funding, and encourage other countries to do the same?

To ask the Secretary of State when the UK will announce its contribution to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, and to confirm we will contribute £50 million in funding each year for the next two years to ensure the UK can contribute to the fight to eradicate polio from the world?

Dear Prime Minister,

We’re closer than ever to stopping polio—and saving millions more from diseases like HIV, TB, and malaria. But that progress is under threat.

Right now, funding for life-saving treatment and prevention is at risk. If we step back, these diseases will spread again. Children will die who could have been protected. It’s a dangerous gamble.

But if we step up, the rewards are huge: healthier families, stronger communities, and fewer outbreaks that cross borders.

With medical breakthroughs advancing faster than ever, this is the time to commit—not retreat.

As you will be aware, in the autumn of 2025, the UK will announce its pledges towards two major global health funds - the Global Fund Against Aids, TB and Malaria and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI). In November, the UK is also co-hosting the 8th Global Fund Replenishment Summit, along with South Africa.

The results to date have been astonishing – to date, the Global Fund has cut the combined death rate from AIDS, TB and malaria by 61%, saving 65 million lives, and preventing millions more from the suffering and disability caused by preventable disease. It is arguably the most effective global health initiative of all time.

Similarly, the GPEI has brought down polio cases by 99% globally and prevented 20 million cases of paralysis in children. Once a worldwide scourge, concentrated vaccination efforts have caused the total number of cases to drop from about 350,000 in 1988 to to just 37 last year, in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria. As the world achieved in 1980 with smallpox eradication, the eradication of polio is now also in sight, but will only achieved with support from countries including the UK.

In terms of the Global Fund, a strong pledge from the UK at this summit, of at least £1 billion, will be vital to encourage other governments to maintain their commitment to global health and disease eradication.  As for GPEI, a UK pledge of £50 million per year, for the next two years, will make a critical difference to the fight towards full polio eradication.

I am therefore writing to urge you to:

Commit at least £1 billion to the Global Fund, and to use all of the UK’s diplomatic leverage in the run-up to the summit to influence other countries to make similarly strong commitments

To ensure that you attend the 8th Global Fund Replenishment Summit in November in South Africa, to demonstrate our commitment to UK leadership on global health at this critical time

To commit £50 million per year, for the next two years, to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, so the UK can continue to play its part in the fight towards full polio eradication
