Tell our African leaders to open the borders!

In a few months' time, ONE representatives will attend a key meeting with leaders from across Africa. At this meeting, they will discuss important issues like the free movement of goods and people across Africa. If they make progress on this, it will boost our economy, and create new jobs and economic opportunities on the continent.

But they don't just want to hear from us. Your voice is key to showing our leaders that we care about creating opportunities for our people, and especially our youth.

    Here are some points you might want to include:

    • Sadly, African countries trade among themselves at a rate of only 14%, whilst in other parts of the world like in Europe, it is 60%.
    • When African countries increase the free movement of goods and people across Africa (by implementing the African Continental Free Trade Area), it could:
      • Bring in an extra $22 billion in exports.
      • Help curb the $90 billion which is lost every year through illegal financial activity.
      • Give Africans more freedom and opportunities for employment.
      • Ensure firms can much more easily find the necessary talent and skills they need and improve productivity.
      • Boost tourism and ensure peace and security through a rich cultural exchange among African countries.
      • Improve the standards of living.
    • Any personal experience of being held back by the lack of free movement across Africa, or what you personally hope to gain if free movement is achieved.
