I am writing today because I remain concerned about the consequences of the administration’s recent decision to abruptly end US foreign assistance during the 90-day review period. Such a move is a gift to our adversaries who have been seeking for decades to eliminate US influence and goodwill throughout the world.

In recent days, China, Iran, and Russia have praised the decision, which puts the move directly at odds with the administration’s stated goal of making the US safer, stronger, and more prosperous.

While I welcome a review of foreign assistance to guarantee it maximizes every US dollar spent abroad, recklessly ending funding full-stop sends the wrong signal to dictatorships and undermines our influence on the global stage. I appreciate the State Department’s waiver for lifesaving programs and PEPFAR, but a lot of this work remains paused. Our adversaries are playing to win, and I am concerned this will cede ground we cannot reclaim.
