As we mark World AIDS Day, I urge you to continue strong U.S. support for the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (the Global Fund). These bipartisan programs have saved millions of lives, strengthened the US and global economies, and built more resilient health systems.

PEPFAR alone has saved 26 million lives, and the Global Fund has cut the combined death rate from AIDS, TB, and malaria by 63%. Global Fund investments have resulted in a return of $3.5 billion to US companies, and every $1 invested in the Global Fund generates $19 in health and economic gains globally. With US government support, both PEPFAR and the Global Fund are partnering to deliver a breakthrough HIV prevention drug that could help end the AIDS epidemic. PEPFAR and Global Fund continue to innovate to drive results. Through a recent partnership with Gilead, both programs are rolling out the breakthrough HIV prevention and treatment drug Lenacapavir, which has a nearly 100% success rate in halting the spread of HIV.

We must continue to invest in these proven programs that are saving lives, improving economic outcomes, and bringing us closer to an end to HIV/AIDS for good. A lack of U.S. leadership in these efforts risks reversing decades of progress against preventable diseases. Please show your commitment by conveying your support to the Appropriations Committees and the Department of State. I also hope that you will convey to the administration that they must reverse their decision to no longer commemorate World AIDS Day.

America’s leadership in global health programs saves lives, promotes stability, and reflects the best of who we are. That’s something the Administration and every American should be proud of.
