Congress must commit to saving lives from AIDS, TB and malaria

Over the past two decades, the US has contributed to a program that has saved 70 million lives from AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. But now Congress is having second thoughts about going all-in.

I was pleased to see that Congress has passed bipartisan legislation to fund foreign assistance for Fiscal Year 2026.

The legislation includes important funding for global health programs like the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. As you likely know, the Global Fund brings together government, civil society, health workers, and the private sector to end these epidemics by procuring medication, strengthening health systems and helping countries take the fight into their own hands. Since the program began, it has saved 70 million lives and reduced the combined death rate from AIDS, TB, and Malaria by 63%, and returned more than $3.5 billion to the US economy. Gavi has provided more than 1.2 billion vaccines to children worldwide, and saved more than 20 million lives. Investments in Gavi result in gains to the US economy through support to US businesses and state economies.

Despite congressional intent, I am concerned that the US Administration has failed to commit to these programs. The US government is past due in payments to the Global Fund and Gavi for FY24 and FY25. The failure to pay has resulted in less lives saved all over the world.

Please continue to commit to these lifesaving global health programs by pushing the Administration to do their job in releasing past due funds and following the law.
