Congress, protect global life-saving vaccine programs now!

Did you know that global vaccine efforts have saved an estimated 154 million lives over the last 50 years? 65% of lives saved by vaccination programs were those of infants.

This is incredible progress against preventable diseases, but the fight is not over. An estimated 21 million children missed out on life-saving vaccines in 2023.

With reports swirling that the administration is taking steps to cut funding for Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, we need to tell Congress that they must support global vaccine efforts and put a stop to such cuts.

I am writing to urge you to sustain U.S. support for Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, which has saved the lives of millions of children and prevented disease outbreaks from becoming worldwide pandemics.

Congress has appropriated $300 million per year for Gavi both in FY24, and again for FY25 in the continuing resolution recently signed into law by President Trump. Unfortunately recent press accounts indicate that the administration may be seeking to terminate that support.

Gavi is a public-private partnership that has helped vaccinate more than 1.1 billion children, preventing more than 18 million future deaths. Children in Gavi-supported countries are 70% less likely to die from a preventable disease before their fifth birthday than when the program began in 2000. Increasing life expectancy by just one year can lead to a 4-5% increase in GDP, and every $1 invested in immunization returns an estimated $54 in wider economic benefits, including savings in health care costs and lost wages and productivity. Gavi also manages critical vaccine stockpiles for high threat diseases, such as Ebola.

Gavi drives self-sufficiency and savings: 19 countries have graduated from Gavi support and are self-financing. By 2030, over 25% of the original lower-income countries supported by Gavi will be fully funding their own programs. Gavi’s success in reducing vaccine costs has generated more than $300 million in savings.

We must ensure that this lifesaving progress is not reversed, which could lead to millions of preventable deaths, especially among children. For that reason, we urge you to ensure that the funding Congress has appropriated for Gavi is spent for exactly that purpose.
