Congress, protect global life-saving vaccine programs now!

Global vaccine programs have saved an estimated 154 million lives over the last 50 years. This is incredible progress against preventable diseases, but the fight is far from over. An estimated 21 million children missed out on life-saving vaccines in 2023.

The administration’s latest budget request zeroes out funding for Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. Now it is up to Congress to stop these cuts and protect global vaccine efforts.

I am writing to urge you to sustain U.S. support for Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, which has saved the lives of millions of children and prevented disease outbreaks from becoming worldwide pandemics.

Congress appropriated $300 million for Gavi in FY25 in the continuing resolution signed into law on March 15, 2025 by President Trump. But, just a few months later, the Administration released a budget request for FY26 that cuts this funding.

Gavi is a public-private partnership that has helped vaccinate more than 1.1 billion children, preventing more than 18 million future deaths. Children in Gavi-supported countries are 70% less likely to die from a preventable disease before their fifth birthday than when the program began in 2000. Increasing life expectancy by just one year can lead to a 4-5% increase in GDP, and every $1 invested in immunization returns an estimated $54 in wider economic benefits, including savings in health care costs and lost wages and productivity. Gavi also manages critical vaccine stockpiles for high threat diseases, such as Ebola.

Gavi drives self-sufficiency and savings: 19 countries have graduated from Gavi support and are self-financing. By 2030, over 25% of the original lower-income countries supported by Gavi will be fully funding their own programs. Gavi’s success in reducing vaccine costs has generated more than $300 million in savings.

This week, Gavi is holding a replenishment conference to recognize global government commitments to support continued immunization for millions of people across the globe from 2026-2028. Last year, the US committed to funding $1.58 billion for Gavi over five years. We must ensure that this commitment continues, and the lifesaving progress enabled by Gavi over the last 25 years is not reversed, which could lead to millions of preventable deaths, especially among children.

For that reason, I urge Congress to include funding for Gavi in FY26 funding measures and hold the Administration accountable for program spending.
