I am writing to respectfully urge that you reject the administration’s rescissions request to revoke $8.3 billion in international assistance funding recently appropriated by Congress, including critical global health programs. This is yet another backdoor attempt to bypass Congress’s spending authority and the will of the American people and, more importantly, it recklessly puts millions of lives at risk.

Recent polling indicates strongly bipartisan support for critical health investments that this package would cut. 65% of Americans (including 59% of Republicans) agree that the U.S. government should invest in fighting disease overseas, compared to only 13% who disagree. That support is even stronger for programs to combat HIV/AIDS: 69% of Americans (including 62% of Republicans) agree that the U.S. should continue to fund those global efforts, compared to only 10% who disagree. I urge you to vote “no” if the rescissions package comes to the Floor. Congress should stand behind the funding it has already appropriated for these critical purposes.
