Now three years into a brutal civil war, Sudan's suffering has not stopped. Millions of families have been forced from their homes, women and children continue to bear the worst of it, and while Canada has made a contribution to the efforts, it is not enough.

I am writing to share my ongoing concern with the crisis in Sudan. The UN estimates that addressing Sudan's crisis, famine, mass displacement, and war affecting 33 million people, will require ~$4.1 billion.

The $1.5 billion pledged at the Berlin conference, including $120 million from Canada, is a meaningful commitment, but it covers barely a third of that need, leaving critical gaps in food and health aid.

Canada has already taken steps to help end the crisis, but the scale of this war demands we use our dollars and our influence.

That means increasing humanitarian funding, supporting access to life-saving aid, and standing with the people of Sudan at a critical moment.

As you know, the largest humanitarian crisis in the world goes on in the shadow of other global events. That is why I am also urging you to ask your colleagues on the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs (FAAE) to study the crisis in Sudan. The sub-committee on international human rights’ (SDIR) study did not bring light to the larger geo-political issues that are fueling the conflict. The FAAE is best positioned to study the crisis in greater detail, and in doing so, signal to other governments around the world that Sudan deserves action now.

Je vous écris pour vous faire part de mon inquiétude persistante face à la crise au Soudan. L'ONU estime que la réponse à la crise, à la famine, aux déplacements massifs de population et à la guerre qui touchent 33 millions de personnes au Soudan nécessitera environ 4,1 milliards de dollars.

Les 1,5 milliard de dollars promis lors de la conférence de Berlin, dont 120 millions provenant du Canada, constituent un engagement significatif, mais ils ne couvrent qu'un tiers des besoins, laissant des déficits critiques en matière d'aide alimentaire et sanitaire.

Le Canada a déjà pris des mesures pour aider à mettre fin à la crise, mais l'ampleur de cette guerre exige que nous utilisions nos ressources financières et notre influence.

Cela signifie augmenter le financement humanitaire, faciliter l'accès à l'aide vitale et se tenir aux côtés du peuple soudanais en cette période critique.

Comme vous le savez bien, la crise humanitaire la plus grave au monde se déroule dans l’ombre d’autres événements mondiaux. C’est pourquoi je vous invite également à demander à vos collègues de la Commission permanente des affaires étrangères (FAAE) d’étudier la crise au Soudan. L’étude menée par la sous-commission des droits de l’homme internationaux (SDIR) n’a pas mis en lumière les enjeux géopolitiques plus larges qui alimentent le conflit. La FAAE est la mieux placée pour étudier la crise plus en détail et, ce faisant, signaler aux gouvernements du monde entier que le Soudan mérite qu'on agisse maintenant.
