Get your MP to show up for East Africa
In East Africa, there is a severe shortage of food due to a deadly combination of climate change, conflict and the global cost of living crisis.
Countries are facing the worst drought in 40 years. Huge loss of life is already unfolding, with an estimated death every 36 seconds from starvation or a hunger-related disease. Following a fifth consecutive failed rainy season, millions of people across parts of East Africa are now experiencing hunger, with countries like Somalia being on the brink of famine.
The Government pledged to 'spare no effort' to protect people most at risk. But, so far, they have taken little action to stop this preventable crisis. Successive cuts to the UK's aid budget have been extremely damaging and the impacts are stark.
But, it doesn't need to be this way. We know it's possible to avert widespread famine and reduce the scale of the crisis. It's been done before. In 2017, together we pushed the UK government to direct £861 million to tackle hunger in the region. Sixteen million lives were saved. Despite the severity of this crisis being worse than in 2017, the Government has committed only £156 million this past year to fund the humanitarian response, an 80% cut to the amount spent previously.
Will you write to your MP asking them to attend a vital parliamentary debate on the 25th April, to ensure we keep our promises to those in East Africa? Together, we can make sure the UK joins its international partners in avoiding a catastrophic loss of life.
Once you've taken action, please increase our collective impact by sharing this page for others to take action too. Thank you.
