Every child is born to live. Andy Burnham can help stop the deadly spread of Ebola.

Every child is born to live, not to die from diseases we already know how to control.

But in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ebola is a deadly threat. The country is experiencing its largest and fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on record, with more than 5,200 confirmed cases and over 2,300 deaths. Children are being hit especially hard: among confirmed cases, children under five were more than twice as likely to die as adults.

The crisis is also disrupting routine healthcare: in the main outbreak hotspots, use of essential health services has fallen by more than 40%, including sharp declines in childhood vaccination. Ebola has also left children without parents and caregivers, adding serious protection and psychosocial risks to an already devastating health emergency.

Britain has helped the world cut child deaths by more than half in 25 years. That progress is on the line now. So far the UK has committed just £20 million to this emergency. That’s not enough to match an outbreak moving this fast.

We can do more. Billions in aid money was diverted to pay for asylum hotel bills in the UK, but now those bills are coming down. That money was meant to save and transform lives. Let's use it to do exactly that.

Dear Prime Minister,

Double the UK's commitment to fighting Ebola from £20 million to £40 million, funded by savings in asylum hotel costs. Invest in the Africa-led response supported by the World Health Organisation, so the response can move as fast as the outbreak does.
